If you would like to go bird watching in the vicinity of Reykjavik, then Mosfellsbaer is probably the best place to stay. From the Iceland Lodge there is a hike and bike trail thru a gathering of trees that leads to the Leirvogur estuary, where a variety of birds gather to feed and breed. Alternatively you can take the trail in the other direction into some wetlands, hills and mountains. Close by you have Thingvellir National Park and Hvalfjordur. You may also want to go whale and bird watching trips by sea and watch birds such as Puffins. Close by you have Myvatn which has more types of ducks than the rest of Iceland combined. On your way there or on a separate trip you might want to go whale and bird watching in Husavik.
